Spring takes over in Les 2 Alpes

featured in Snow report Author Alex Armand - TipTop Ski Coaching, Les 2 Alpes Reporter Updated

We have had very varied weather in Les 2 Alpes over the last two weeks, even the forecasts have been very unsure and inaccurate. This turbulent weather is coming to an end and another clear sunny spell is starting.

Sunday night saw some snowfall and Monday is due to be cloudy and sunny, a bit of a mix. However, from Tuesday, the sun is out and temperatures will be rising during the day. This is likely to see spring snow conditions as, with clear nights, the snow will freeze hard and be firm in the mornings, and soften during the day.

The Glacier & La Toura

Snow conditions are fantastic up on the glacier, coupled with sporadic magnificent views when the skies clear. The pistes are in perfect condition, well groomed with plenty of fresh, cold, soft snow. Don’t forget that, if you don’t fancy the T-bar,s you have the funicular that runs under the glacier taking you from 3100m to 3400m. This is also available to pedestrians so that you can get to the viewing platform and orientation table at the summit. Both these features are well worth a trip and have amazing views.

The area between the glacier and 2600m is in excellent conditions because the snow has stayed cold up there. Pistes boast corduroy in the mornings, perfect for carving while short turns are a pleasure on the red Glacier 8 in the mornings. La Toura area is north facing so also in excellent condition. The jumps in the freestyle land are well shaped, the slalom is great fun for all the family and the blue pistes are groomed and a pleasure to ride.

Bellecombe & La Fée

Bellecombe is known by the older generation as the “Grand Nord”, a name that comes from the fact that it's north-facing and very cold. This can be felt in the quality of the snow, as it doesn’t get much sun it stays in excellent condition. The Bellecombe 6 Grand Couloir has not been bashed for a good few days so is bumping up nicely. The entrance is fairly easy but beware it is much steeper under the Bellecombe chair and, being a couloir, there is only one way out once you are in – down. This area can lead to the Super Diable pistes if you exit the chair to the right. These are still in great condition but face more to yhe south so can be firm in the mornings and softer in the afternoons.

La Fée holds blues, reds and blacks. The blue is very pretty but has long flat sections. The reds are fantastic at the top but, the last section down to the la FÚe Refuge can be icy and a little tricky therefore it is best done early in the day when it’s freshly bashed. The black runs are steep but short. The snow is in good condition and the off-piste here is also fun.

Les Cretes & Bas de piste

Les Cretes is a fantastic low intermediate/beginners' area – the magic carpet is a very easy slope and the snow is still in good condition as it’s at 2100m. This is accessed by the white eggs and you can also descend in the white eggs as well. The Petite Crete is an easy green run and makes a great first long slope – it’s flat and road-like at the top then opens out into a wide easy slope. From Les Cretes, you can ski back to the village on black, red, blue or green runs. The green is a 5km roadway that kids love but adults tend to find this very tiring on their legs. The blue run is excellent during the day but can get very busy at going-home time. You will find an information point near the top of the white eggs from about 15:00, they will tell you how busy the runs are and the condition of the blue before you set off down it. We are hitting springtime so the front face, in general, is refreezing overnight so it can be firm in the mornings and warms up during the day to become soft.

All the drag lifts at the bas de piste are open and well maintained, as are the pistes. There are five free drag lifts here while the rest require a lift pass. The snow is again springlike so can be firm in the mornings although we have had a few cms of fresh overnight so they will be beautifully soft this morning.

Forecast

The forecast is for Monday to be cold and windy but sunny. The rest of the week looks sunny with rising temperatures. The avalanche risk has remained at 3/5 above 2200m and dropped to 2/5 below. This can change during the day as the snowpack heats up.
