Cold followed by snow & sun in Les 2 Alpes
The sun is shining and more snow is on its way
What a week we've had since my last snow report! We started last week with temperatures that you would expect in Siberia, not the French Alps! The resort was seeing the mercury drop as low as -17ºC and, up on the glacier, well below -25ºC (without wind chill)! This was followed by non-stop snow towards the end of the week and on Saturday. The pistes have been knee-deep in fresh snow and the off-piste to dangerous to touch.
Thankfully, this week brought us some sun and cold nighttime temperatures that have settled the snowpack. The avalanche risk started at 4/5 after all the snow and has now settled to 3/5.
Bas de piste
With all the recent snowfall we have seen, the Bas de piste has taken on a new life. Out with the ice and in with the soft, white, fluffy stuff! It has all been nicely groomed as well so it's perfect again for beginners and more nervous skiers. It is lovely to see the resort all wintery.
The glacier & La Toura
On the glacier, the snow has remained cold and, therefore, in sheltered areas is still very light and powdery. The glacier has seen some winds so there are areas of wind slab around but the pistes are in perfect condition. We still have fairly cold air temperatures so wrap up warm to head here.
La Toura is a playground for everyone, the skier/boarder cross is running well, the park is open and well prepared, there is powder between the pistes and the sun is shining today. The restaurant in the bowl of La Toura has a fantastic terrace which sits in the sun and is sheltered from the wind. You can watch the world ski by from here whilst enjoying some of the best pizzas on the mountain.
La Fee
La Fee is a beautiful area with great views up into some of the un-pisted/unmarked valleys coming down from the glacier area. La Fee 2 is a fantastic long blue run giving these great views. It has a few flat sections though so don’t forget to “schuss” where you need to or it can be a bit of a pole along. This is a great area for off-piste as well with some new runs having been put in down the west face of La Fee in the last few weeks. These are black as black can be and un-pisted, so make sure you are warmed up and ready for some moguls and fresh snow.
Bellecombe
Again, a fantastic north-facing area with great snow conditions. Some of the bigger off-piste decents here need to be respected at the moment as the north faces are the most dangerous, make sure you speak to a Ski Patroller or book a guide. The pistes are all in gullies so, when the mist has come in, this is the area to head for with is wide gullies offering a bit of definition to the snow.
Valley Blanche
The Valley Blanche has been a superb choice in the busy February half-term weeks, of which this is the last. The snow is fantastic over there, it gets the sun first thing in the morning and the pistes are empty. What more could you ask for? However, do be careful as the blues are more like reds over there and the reds like blacks so don’t take your first-time beginners. La Bergerie Kanata is an excellent choice for lunch with a great selection of traditional mountain food all prepared on site. If you want to push the boat out, their speciality is rather a surprising one for the mountains, “Moules Frites”. This is served as a menu with a cold beer - perfect after a hard morning skiing!
The forecast
The weather is going to be beautiful today with lots of sunshine and temperatures remaining relatively cold. The weekend looks to be bringing us some more snow with freezing levels rising significantly.
Stay safe out there and respect the mountain!
