Les Deux Alpes Food & Drink

Dining & Going Out in Les Deux Alpes
Les Deux Alpes’ nightlife is almost as exhausting as its mountain pursuits! With a wide range of restaurants, bars and cafés to keep you well fed and watered there is also a plentiful array of opportunities for a bit of après or late-night venues for a spot of clubbing. The countless terraces ensure that you can always find a sunny spot to relax in...
Alpine Food & Drink

Although not as renowned as the haute cuisine of Paris or the fine bistros of Lyon the Alps do have a number of tasty treats in store for those who like to sample some regional specialities. Meat and cheese feature heavily in Alpine cooking – so it’s just as well there are plenty of mountains where you can work off the extra pounds! ... see "Dining in the Alps" for more

Bars & Clubs
Not really a bar or a club but we thought Salon de The la Marjolaine was worth an honorary mention for its homemade chocolate fondue.

There’s an Englishman, an Irishman and a Scottish man – who run a bar in Les Deux Alpes called The Red Frog. No, really. Apart from that there is also a pool room, wireless internet access and big plasma screens for sporting events.

Smithys Tavern is a bit of a regional institute with another branch over in Alpe d’Huez. Its popular mix of draught beer, vin chaud, shooters and live music lead to every night being one big party. It also claims to have the longest vodka bar in France. The restaurant upstairs is also well worth a look.

If you want to party with a load of crazy Dutch people head to either La Grotte du Yeti or Snowcafe Veronica. La Grotte du Yeti advertises itself as an International Party Bar and has branches in Tignes, Les Menuires, Risoul, St Francois Lonchamp, Oz, Alpe d’Huez and St Sorlin d’Arves. They certainly seem to have cracked the Alpine party scene with regular events, party nights and drink promotions and is the only bar that we know of that has a designated Soup Hour?! Soup is served most nights between 4-5pm. Snowcafe Veronica is equally as lively as well as being staffed by annoyingly gorgeous Dutch girls with music by the improbably named DJ Bastard...

The Le Maya Cafe is open from 4pm to 2am and keeps everyone happy with cocktails, shooters, fancy dress parties and theme nights.

If you're not into the music played by the usual après bands get down to B4 which hosts regular Drum & Bass, House and Hip Hop nights. Look out as well for their themed nights such as Ladies Night, Pirate Parties, Latino nights and Beach Parties. Open 4pm-2am.

Please see here for contact details of all these venues and more.

Aprés Ski
The Secret is one of Les Deux Alpes’ liveliest après venues. Located right in the town centre there is usually a live band or DJ playing, frequent auctions and competitions with snowboards and holidays for grabs and 4 screens for sports games and extreme sports videos. The wide range of beers and bar snacks will see you through the night, especially if you time it right for happy hour or one of the regular drinks promos!

Most of the bars in Les Deux Alpes cater for the après crowd - you're pretty much guaranteed live music and shooters wherever you go but a few honourable mentions should go to: Smithys, the Yeti and Smokey Joes.

Restaurants
Head to Crêpes a Go Go to sample a French delicacy that we Brits only seem to get round to making once a year. For around 7€, depending on your choice of filling, you can tuck into a tasty pancake on the sunny terrace or take refuge in the cosy ‘olde worlde’ bar with a choice of beers on tap.

To put the night to bed head for Chalet à Pizza on Rue des Vikings. Open from 11am to 2pm you will find all manner of pizza and fast food to take away or eat in, they also do home delivery. There is a wide choice of take away joints throughout Les Deux Alpes.

Restaurant la Cloche is a charming little place in the centre of town serving regional specialities such as fondue and raclette as well as a selection of salads, pizzas, meat and fish dishes. In summer you can sit outside on the large sunny terrace decorated with flower troughs and hanging baskets.

Le Charbon de Bois serves an array of regional specialities in a traditional ambience with an open fire and pleasant terrace. The selection of fondues is impressive, with interesting variations such as coconut or almond, all served with chips and salad. For non-meat eaters the traditional fondues and raclettes also have a ‘Nordique’ version where the ham has been replaced with smoked salmon.

If you’re in need of a full English after a big night out Smokey Joe’s will come up with the goods, breakfast is served until 2pm for those of you who are unlikely to see the morning. It also serves good value Tex Mex food, including great spare ribs and fine homemade burgers. If you can’t drag yourself away, or are just too full too move, stick around for après when regular theme nights and guest DJs get things going.

Le P’tit Polyte is the restaurant of Chalet-Hotel Mounier, run by a couple who take great pride in looking after their guests. The ambience is provided by Georgia Mounier, whose husband Robert displays his skills in the kitchen with an inventive and ever changing gourmet menu. The set menus are good value for such a high standard of cuisine; this is complimented by an excellent wine list. In the summer you are welcome to dine on the terrace or beside the pool.

Open daily from midday to 2am Restaurant les Bleuets is a popular hangout for skiers and boarders serving snacks, pizzas, pancakes, etc. It has a friendly and lively buzz to it.

Smithys Tavern is one of the most popular bar-restaurants in town – but not the place to go for a quiet table for two! Above the bar is the char grill restaurant serving ample portions of rib-eye steak, char grilled fish platters, Alpine salads and the like. The large wooden tables and comfy alcoves are ideal for families or group outings and the children’s menu is better than average. Their homemade knickerbockerglory has to be sampled!

Please see here for contact details of all these restaurants and more.

Mountain Restaurants
At 2600m Le Panoramic is well placed for a timely lunch break. It stills bears evidence of its mountain hut origins and has a great atmosphere. The views are wonderful and the food is better than the average mountain restaurant fare; you can choose from traditional restaurant or self-service.

La Patache serves traditional French mountain food ie lots of meat, cheese and potatoes – basic components of the ever-popular Tartiflette! There is also a daily special and a choice of homemade cakes and deserts. This popular restaurant has a great sunny terrace and the options of table service in the bar-restaurant or a quick bite at the Patachon self-service snack bar. The sun drenched deckchairs and spectacular views make this worth a visit.

At the top of the Télécabine du Diable is Le Diable au Cœur, a large bustling restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere. Its open fire and regional cuisine help make it popular and lively; starters range from 9€ to 15€, pasta dishes and omelettes are good value at around the same price and main meals start at 13.50€ and go up to 17.50€ for a meat/fish dish. The owner is the son of Mdm and Mr Mounier of Le P’tit Polyte.

Please see here for contact details of all these mountain restaurants and more.
